Plant protection

Continuing discovery of the health advantages of pomegranates has triggered miracle growth in the demand for them. In response, farmers are expanding the planted area of this superfruit and investing in innovative technologies to improve yields and profitability. Improved pomegranate growing conditions encourage the development of pests and diseases. Pest proliferation in and around the orchard may raise the cost of adopting the means to arrest it to as much as half of annual production costs.

In high yielding orchards the major means to protect the plant is by chemical control that does well when applied intensively. But this runs contrary to the concept of a super-fruit that protects human health. Moreover, pesticide residues on fruit are limited by regulations which prohibit the sale of fruit that has been heavily and / or recently treated. This complexity forces Pomeg-Tech experts to seek means to reduce the number of chemical applications, bearing in mind the resulting reduction in the level of protection and its effect on fruit quality, attractiveness and marketability, i.e. price.

Pomeg-Tech has developed a sophisticated system aimed at optimizing the number of applications:

Prior to planting: Planning must consider epidemiological parameters, such as former crop, neighboring crop, climatic conditions, development curves of pests and diseases in the area.
In the bearing orchard: Timing of treatments is of the essence! An increase in treatment efficiency allows for a reduction in their number. Optimal timing is based on a comprehensive understanding of the problems, including key factors affecting pest life cycles, available chemicals, their specific efficiency and decay curves and the monitoring methods Pomeg-Tech has developed.
Reduce or even prevent the development of pest resistance by utilizing information about pesticides' Mode of Action.
Apply chemical treatments in ''Opportunity Windows'' after considering the economic threshold value, and
Combine additional non-chemical treatments in a comprehensive Integrated Pest Management (IPM) scheme.
